![]() Hilarious and cool all at once, Iggy comes across like a more congenial Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now on it. Lyrically it’s up there with Tarantino in the comic-brutality-as-punk-rock-sermon stakes: “ You take your motherfucking laptop / And just shove it into your goddamn foul mouth and down your shit heel gizzard / You fucking phony two faced three timing piece of TURD!”. And if this is his final goodbye, it’s a truly mesmerising sign off. It could have easily cropped up on Arctic Monkeys’ sleazy last album ‘AM’, had Homme shoulder-barged Alex Turner out of the songwriters chair.īest of all is killer closing track ‘Paraguay’, a true gestation of everything that’s so thrilling about Homme and Pop individually, with Iggy spluttering his way to the very end. Album centrepiece ‘Sunday’ is sprightlier: it features plastic pop go-go-girl backing vocals and a sweeping orchestral coda. “ I’ve nothing but my name”, he repeats at one point, sounding deep and ghoulish. Iggy’s always been to the point, lyrically (“ I’m worth a million in prizes” – ‘Lust For Life’), but it’s still disturbing to hear him sound quite so wary of whatever’s around the corner. ![]() Death, he sings, is “ a pill that’s tough to swallow” (‘American Valhalla’), while ‘Break Into Your Heart’, eerily declares “ Time is so tight, it’s closing in”. It’s because, in context, Pop appears bruised and scared here more than anything. The same song sees Iggy refer to himself as “ America’s greatest living poet”, but rather than throttle him for being tactless, you end up adhering to the sentiment. “ Your hourglass ass / And your powerful back / Your slant devil eyes / And the ditch down your spine”, goes the brilliant, Bowie-ish ‘Gardenia’. It’s an intelligent, sassy garage rock record that’s obsessed with two things: sex and death. Iggy’s vocals and lyrics are astounding – he’s like an angry young man all over again, and is far more gnarly and potent than any of his contemporaries. There, the two aimed to make something brilliant out of nothing, with the depth of Iggy’s Bowie-produced 1977 proto-punk classics ‘The Idiot’ and ‘Lust For Life’, the sonic textures of QOTSA’s ‘Like Clockwork’ and the best backing band America could offer in 2016.īrilliantly, that’s what ‘Post Pop Depression’ actually sounds like. The two swapped notes over email for months (poetry, rock’n’roll war stories, demos), before Iggy turned up unannounced on Homme’s lawn, jumped in his car and drove to Rancho De La Luna studio deep in the Californian desert. Pop sought out Homme after the two met awkwardly at the Kerrang! Awards some years ago, thinking he’d be a good writing partner and vibesman for his last roll of the dice. But almost certainly, this album marks the closing of the last great chapter in Iggy’s musical life – ‘The Stooges’, ‘The Idiot’, ‘Lust For Life’, ‘The Passenger’ and some of the most iconic performances in rock history – as we know it. Does that mean it’s his last ever release? Well… probably not. “Josh has an amazing feeling for other artists,” the photographer said.“I feel like I’m closing up after this,” says 68-year-old Iggy Pop of ‘Post Pop Depression’, his collaboration album with Queens Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders and LA multi-instrumentalist Dean Fertita. Neumann credited Queens of the Stone Age leader Josh Homme, who co-wrote and produced Post Pop Depression, with the idea of integrating additional visual projects into the mix. He added with another laugh that, “Everybody ends up documenting me one way or another, so this is the way this has been documented - a little more formally than some of the others. I’m looking at it like each day means something, so here’s a documentary of the day.” The days of making it, the actual part of your life. Someone looked at the thing in a certain way,” said Pop, a Michigan native who referred to Detroit as “my natural habitat” and thanked the Fox Theatre crowd “for spawning me and keeping me alive with your magic, dirty energy.” Neummann and Helders’ photos, Pop added, evoke “the days. Though noticeably weary just over an hour after performing a ferocious show at the nearby Fox Theatre, Pop - joined by Helders - spent some time looking at the photos, guided through the exhibit by Neumann. The photos will become part of a limited-edition coffee table book, probably later this year, while a 30-minute documentary is also planned about the project, with footage shot in the recording studio and during rehearsals for the concert tour. 1 on a Billboard Chart With ‘Post Pop Depression’

![]() Ars Nova Workshop spearheaded the event as part of its ongoing concert series. And some of Philly's more "outside" players were already engaged elsewhere on Saturday: A big band led by saxophonist Bobby Zankel was performing in collaboration with AACM leading light Muhal Richard Abrams. It remains the home base of Marshall Allen and the Sun Ra Arkestra, who have done DIY music promotion for decades. The city boasts a rich avant-garde legacy as well. ![]() All these elements converge to give Philly jazz a kind of gritty, groove-oriented populism, readily apparent at the CCJF. Gamble & Huff, the famed soul and R&B producers, pioneered a "Philly Sound" that rivaled Motown in influence, and many jazz musicians came on board as session players. The impact of organ greats Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson, Shirley Scott and Trudy Pitts is still widely felt. John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Benny Golson and countless others came from the city. "Music is kind of way down on that list."īut Philly music history is easily as rich as Nashville's, Boone noted, and its stylistic range is arguably broader. "When people think of us they think of Rocky, the sports teams, they think of cheese steaks and hoagies," he says. Otherwise, he said, "We just went to the people, and the people showed up, just like they showed up today."īassist Mike Boone, a mentor to many younger players in town, looks at Philly as an undervalued music capital. Stuart did line up advertising support from Yelp and Philadelphia Magazine a donation from the coffee maker L'Aube Torrefaction and free live sound and recording from Turtle Studios. But in spite of this, the CCJF had to fend for itself. Conference of Mayors) and spoke of his own personal stake in Philly's jazz culture. (In fairness, he added, "We had just launched the Kickstarter a week before, and we'd only raised about $1,500 at that point.") To his credit, Mayor Michael Nutter held a press conference on Jazz Day (April 13, as declared by the U.S. Stuart sought government help early on, but a meeting with officials "wasn't very fruitful," he said. To walk here is to see immediately how events like CCJF can brighten urban spaces. Today Sansom Street is hardly pretty - a narrow and often malodorous lane of dumpsters and parking garage exits - but also decently sprinkled with businesses. (One venue, Milkboy, is on neighboring Chestnut Street.) Val Brown, a patron at Fergie's and an area resident in the '70s and '80s, recalled how Sansom was once blighted, a shell of abandoned industry, "the street you hurried past to get to Market Street." The four CCJF venues are mostly dotted along Sansom Street downtown, near the stretch of Broad Street known as the Avenue of the Arts. But for one day - possibly the most significant day for Philly jazz in years - these establishments came together for a grassroots showcase of one of the city's greatest cultural assets.Įrnest Stuart, founder of the Center City Jazz Festival, performs during a mid-afternoon set with his quartet. Fergie's, an old-school Irish bar, and Milkboy, a coffee shop and rock venue, do not. Of these, Chris's Jazz Café and Time Restaurant book jazz regularly. ![]() On Saturday afternoon, he booked 16 bands at four venues within short walking distance. Buoyed by a Kickstarter campaign, which exceeded its goal of $16,000, Stuart took a cue from New York's Undead and Winter Jazzfests. The Center City Jazz Festival is the brainchild of trombonist Ernest Stuart, 28. There was a larger goal as well: to revive a year-round jazz presence in Philadelphia, where the jazz club scene has all but collapsed. last Saturday, and the dim carpeted room upstairs at Fergie's Pub was starting to fill up.įor the next six hours, Dean, a saxophonist, and his fellow bandleaders would strive not only to honor the legacy embodied by Heath and others, but also to bring forward their own art, a music of today. The Wade Dean Enspiration, a gutsy young quintet, led off the festival with "Gingerbread Boy" by Jimmy Heath, one of Philly's many homegrown jazz legends. From the first downbeat of the first Center City Jazz Festival in Philadelphia, you could hear history in the air - and maybe history being made. ![]() With borders closing in South America, we plan to hunker down at the beach and see what unfolds in the coming weeks!
